A Rightful Place

Extension Exhibition: June 17 to July 23, 2017 at the West Wing Gallery

Professional photographers travelled to locations throughout Saskatchewan making portraits of consenting “newcomer” individuals. Participants were selected by participating Newcomer Welcome Centres throughout the province including Swift Current. To emphasize the richness, depth and dignity of the world cultures that newcomers hail from, and challenges they may have faced in their immigration, participants were invited to wear a piece of traditional clothing from their country of origin and/or hold an object of personal significance for the portrait. They were asked to briefly explain where they are from, why they emigrated, and what circumstances they faced in their experience of immigrating to a new land. Participants were supplied with disposable cameras to photograph aspects of their current life. The image they made will accompany their portrait and personal narrative. This exhibition stems from a year-long multidisciplinary art and social justice project.

Organized by Common Weal Arts Inc, with the Newcomer Welcome Centres of Saskatchewan.
A Canada 150 project for AGSC.

Opening Reception Saturday, June 17, 1-5 pm at the West Wing Gallery, hosted by the SW Newcomer Welcome Centre
